Sourcing
Sandalwood is a hemiparasitic plant. This means it relies on the roots of other plants to obtain water and nutrients. It parasitizes the root systems of other trees and plants until they die, then seeks out new host plants by growing its roots. Sandalwood trees typically reach a height of 4–9 meters. The essential oil is extracted from the woody parts through steam distillation. Distillation can take up to ten days. The highest concentration of oil is found in the heartwood, which is the central part of the trunk. Therefore, older trees always yield a greater quantity and better quality of oil. It takes at least 15 years for a sandalwood tree to mature for harvesting. However, unlike other wood species, sandalwood retains its aroma for decades.
