Sourcing
doTERRA Frankincense essential oil is a proprietary blend of three different types of frankincense resin – Boswellia carterii, Boswellia frereana, and Boswellia sacra. Different species of frankincense trees thrive in different conditions and soil types. Some species prefer sandy soil, while others thrive in dry, rocky environments. Therefore, doTERRA sources frankincense from multiple locations to ensure that each type of resin used in the oil comes from where that specific Boswellia species can grow in its most favorable conditions.
Frankincense was a valuable commodity in ancient Egyptian, Assyrian, Persian, Macedonian, and Kushite cultures. Thus, these precious resins have been part of one of the world's oldest global supply chains, so to speak.
The essential oil is extracted from the resin of the frankincense tree. The resin, also known as the "tears" of the frankincense tree, is cleaned and then sorted by size and color before distillation begins.
In Somaliland, the raw material for frankincense essential oil comes from the Sanaag region. Nearly one-third of the country's population lives in this region, and harvesting frankincense is their main source of income. In Somaliland, trees are passed down from generation to generation, and those who harvest the resin have access to the trees in a given area based on tribal rights.
